Adult Education & Literacy Program

The School District of University City Adult Education & Literacy Program (AEL) provides basic education to adults, ages 16 and over, so they may become productive, self-sufficient, and contributing members of society. As we adjust to the new norm with COVID-19, we are making the necessary adjustments to ensure the quality of our education programs and services are maintained.

High School Equivalency

The High School Equivalency Test is a computer based exam that replaced the GED in January 2014. We offer free online orientation for this new test seveal times a week. We have adjusted our structure to accommodate virtual learning and to prepare students to test online.

English as a Second Language

Our focus is to provide students whom English is not their primary language understand the power of English words. We assist with vocabulary improvement, comprehension, writing skills, and more. We are offering these classes virtually.

Literacy Education

We believe reading and writing is essential to achieving success in the United States. This program focuses on assisting individuals learn English with the help of volunteer tutors who work one-on-one with individuals. It improves your ability to comprehend and understand content.

Adult Education & Literacy Program

We have three core areas of focus; (1) High School Equivalency, this is a computer based exam; (2) Literacy Education, to assist adults learn to read and write, which is essential to achieving success in the United States; and (3) English as a Second Language (ESL), providing students, for whom English is not thier primary language, with a working knowledge of English in preparation for citizenship tests, the workplace, additional education and daily living.

Prior to entering any UCAEL Class, participants are required to complete the Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE) or the Complete Language Assessment System-English (CLAS-E). The TABE assessment will measure skills in Reading, Mathematics and Language for those seeking to pass the HiSET and WorkKeys Exam. The CLAS-E assessment will measure skills in Reading/Writing and Speaking/Listening. After completing our pre-registration you will be emailed a form to schedule your intake and testing session.
