English as a Second Language (ESL) is particularly important to University City’s diverse and growing community. We are a city on the move. The aim of this program continues to be to provide students, for whom English is not their primary language, with a working knowledge of English in preparation for citizenship tests, the workplace, additional education, and daily living.

Most of our ESL programs are conducted in small classroom style to allow students to receive individual attention from their teachers. Students study English and also participate in the cultural and social activities of the school and community where they study.

The goal of an ESL program is to improve a student’s level of English. ESL classes teach different English language skills, depending on a students’ English abilities, interests, and needs. All programs teach the following: conversational English, grammar, reading, listening comprehension, writing, and vocabulary.

We know that many individuals attend our ESL classes to prepare for study at a College or University. Others study in our ESL Program to improve their English for travel, social or employment purposes. They can study in General English classes to practice conversational English and learn the skills necessary for communicating in many different situations.
