AEL Program: High School equivalency

On January 2, 2014, the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) began using the High School Equivalency Test (HiSET), developed by Education Testing Services (ETS), as its high school equivalency test. This test replaces the GED®. (which expired at the end of 2013 )

The University City Adult Education and Literacy Program assist adult learners with HiSET (High School Equivalency) preparation and more. We offer a variety of tools to help students decide which higher education and/or employment options best fit their life’s goals. Students learn computer skills, including basic computer usage and Internet research. We assist you to prepare for your next steps after obtaining your HiSET Certification!

By deciding to get your HiSET Certification, you will have taken a big step toward improving your life and achieving your goals. You are joining many people who realize that continuing their education as an adult can increase thier opportunities in the work place, open doors to higher education and possibly increase thier income and quality of life. The HiSET®​ exam consists of five subtests (content areas): Math, Science, Social Studies, Reading, and Writing. The cost for each subtest is $17 ($10 to purchase the subtest and $7 to cover the cost of administering the subtest at a testing center). Beginning with the purchase of your first subtest, there is also a $10 state registration fee payable once every 12 months. You can purchase any number of different subtests at the same time. You will receive two retests for each subtest you purchase. If you need to retake a subtest, you pay only the $7 test center fee.

HiSET® Exam at Home Now Available

ETS and the HiSET program are pleased to announce the High School Equivalency exam at home option. With the at home option, you can take any of the five subtests that make up the High School Equivalency exam on your own computer at home or in another secure location. Each subtest delivered at home has the same content, format and on-screen experience as the test you would take at a test center. Your at home appointment will be monitored by a human proctor online through ProctorU®.
